A few years back, Mr. P., as we affectionately call the founder of our little Greenville, N.C., company, was traveling along the coast of his beloved Brazil when he spied something intriguing in one of the local markets there: Wide-brimmed hats handcrafted out of wonderfully weathered old cotton canvas, with heavy stitching, shifts in color, fraying, stains, rips, punctures, patches and even occasional ink marks. Mr. P. immediately began inquiring about the unusual hats, learning that their material was actually old canvas tarps discarded by Brazilian trucking companies after lengthy use as protection for freight. A romantic in the broadest sense of the word, Mr. P. was instantly as hooked by the story as he had been by the hats themselves.

This is the second Cuba Libre I have bought directly from realdeal.com. the first one is made from a much heavier canvas than this one. So much so that had I bought from a third party retailer I would belive it to be counterfeit. Also, the plastic brim material is of thinner gauge. I have bought my dad 2 original style hats over the years and they are made with the heavier canvas. BOTH hats use an inferior velcro on the back. It wears out almost immediately. The hat needs adjusted frequently as it stretches with wear, shrinks when you wash it. My new hat is only maybe 2mo old and I have to sew it, making it unadjstable, like my original hat. These hats wear quickly, needing frequently sewn and patched. I expressed my concern to customer service and received a cookie cutter response Please see attached images supporting my above review. Old hat on the left, new, right. It can barely support its own weight.

Love the hat, don’t like base traps...they wear large. Velcro on my first hat was not very good quality but the hat was well made and durable...wore it all the time and machine washed well. Lost 1st one in the lake

Great hat. Too many fake patches. Velcro strap is a little rough. Otherwise fits well and look good.

Actual quality of the product is great. Sizing is different than tge bucket type hat they have. This hat runs a little larger than the bucket hats, i had to return and get a smaller size.
