But soon enough, the inevitable happened: Friends wanted a rope hammock as good as the one he’d made for himself, and then it was friends of friends, and then folks Cap’n Josh didn’t know at all. In no time, family members were pitching in to help him meet the increasing demand. Jump forward just a few decades, and the Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock had already become the standard by which other rope hammocks were being measured. Today, we get machine assistance with a few production processes, such as rope-making and woodcutting, to capture the precision required. At Pawleys Island, we don’t view the human part of the process merely as important; we regard it as essential. Handcrafting is who we are.

Quality no longer there. I have bought numerous Pawley Island hammocks over the years and they WERE the best, but no longer. They have stopped bending the wood rope holders and are now identical to Chinese import hammocks that are 70% less expensive- you are now better off buying one of those. Very sad to see a once superior product become mediocre, just so they can reduce their costs. I wish they would at least give their customers the option to pay more and get the real thing.

I got my first Pawleys Island hammock 25 years ago. It was used regularly, but brought inside each day. The rope finally wore out where it passed through the rough holes of the wooden ends. My new hammock is of noticeably inferior quality. The wooden ends are not oak, and not bowed with a slight curve. The rope is thinner gauge and the weave and knots are loose. It is a shame that the craftsmanship has declined so dramatically. I will be surprised if this hammock lasts more than a few years. Planned obsolescence seems to be the way of the world.

This is not my first Pawley Island hammock. I purchased one years ago, it remained outside in the weather and lasted forever. Because of the quality I ordered another one when my first one finally was ready to retire.

My Mother bought ours in the early 70's and it is still in absolutely perfect condion. The only rule was that you always put it up over night. We have loved this hammock in the States, Ireland and now in Wales. It has made many precious memories. Thank you for them all.

Great product....when you finally find it. Not enough difference in the choices offered on line. Until the item finally showed up at my house, I wasn't actually sure what I was getting. Of course once installed and used, I loved it.

The hammock arrived quickly after ordering. The cotton rope required several initial adjustments as I expected with a cotton product. We were concerned with some "frayed" rope ends that had not been sealed but the website FAQ's explains that this tasseling is normal and should not progress past the knot. The hammock is very comfortable.

The hammock is very comfortable. The cotton rope is a bit pricey but I'm hoping that the quality of the material and workmanship will outweigh the cost.

Our last one was purchased while visiting Pawkeys island and lasted 20 years! Numerous time we Kate's in the hammick along with 5 grandchildren. As they grew up they payed in it with their children! I hope this one lasts at least 1/2 that many years! Best hammock ever!
