Cap’n Josh, as he was known, was really only seeking a cool, comfortable, stable night’s sleep onboard his boat; he never set out to be in the hammock business! But soon enough, the inevitable happened: Friends wanted a rope hammock as good as the one he’d made for himself, and then it was friends of friends, and then folks Cap’n Josh didn’t know at all. In no time, family members were pitching in to help him meet the increasing demand. Jump forward just a few decades, and the Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock had already become the standard by which other rope hammocks were being measured. Today, we get machine assistance with a few production processes, such as rope-making and woodcutting, to capture the precision required. At Pawleys Island, we don’t view the human part of the process merely as important; we regard it as essential. Handcrafting is who we are.

My Pawleys Island hammock belonged to my grandfather and hung by the lake at the cottage when I was younger in the 1980s. Now it belongs to me and has its place in front of my family cottage where my wife and kids enjoy it along with me. It has been providing relaxation for over 30 years with no signs of slowing down. I would only replace it with another Pawleys when the time comes.

The company associate who took my order over the phone was extremely helpful in making sure that my purchase would be sent at a time when the recipient of the gift would be at home as they were going on vacation. I found the hammock was harder to stretch when setting up on my stand than my previous one It also seem to sag more when laying in it.

Replaced my 20+ year Pawley Island rope hammock with this one and it looked identical upon receipt. A light sprinkling rain began and I brought the hammock inside as recommended. It was at first many links down the chain on both ends of the Pawley frame. When I put the hammock back on, it had shrunk considerably and now is on the very last link of the chain on both ends. If it shrinks any more, I won't be able to get it on the frame at all. Didn't have this problem with the first one. Disappointed.
