It's tedious soldering work, but I save a ton of money building my own quad-core cables and these connectors are as good as it gets. For patch bay cables, I like to put colored boots on 'em - look for "Neutrik BXX Cable Boot Bushings for XX Series XLR Connectors." There's nine colors available.

I use the gold pins for cables that may be used outdoors. They will not corrode as easily as the nickel pins. My favorite application is on our audio snake that is often used to cover rainy soccer and football games. Even if the cable is dragged across a wet field, the pins dry clean and last longer then the standard nickel.
