After owning them for about a month, I have been flying with my Zulu 3’s a few times now and I have to say, they’re amazing! For starters, I’m a private pilot just starting instrument, to give you an idea of how I’m using them. I’m very happy with the quality of this headset. There’s not a lot of plastic, ear seals and head pad are quite plush, and they’re very light! They’re also available for purchase and easily replaceable if need be. If you need it, Lightspeed offers a complimentary taller head pad. I have what I consider to be a larger head and they fit just fine out of the box. On me, the microphone doesn’t quite reach the middle of my mouth, which is not ideal. That said, Lightspeed has an adjustable gain mic that I am still getting dialed in. I have given this short mic feedback to Lightspeed and they seem to be aware of it. Hopefully, they make a retrofit mic kit. Sound quality is crystal clear. The controller offers an option to switch audio between stereo and mono. I’ve used the Bluetooth a couple times and audio from my phone also sounds great. The noise canceling does make a popping noise if the ear cups don’t have a good seal on your head, but I suspect this is typical given the way ANR works. Just a quick adjustment of the headband and problem solved. The cord is a woven fabric and very flexible. There also seems to be good strain relief where it goes into the controller. The cord was important to me as the one on my old Avcomm, after 10-15 years, has the rubber sheath cracking and falling off. The buttons on the controller are easy to use, but also not big enough to where they are pushed when the controller is in the 172/182 side pocket. Plug to controller wire is approximately 16”; controller to headset is 42”. Controller is 6” long, 9” total with strain reliefs. The case is a little bulky, but keep in mind, these headsets don’t fold up like others which I’m okay with. It’s also a rigid case so it offers good protection for your investment. It comes with a detachable carry handle. There’s also a pocket inside for small items. All in all, the Zulu 3 is an excellent headset for a good price. The only things I would love to see are a longer mic boom and a clip for the controller so I can hang it on the 172/182 side pocket. For me, these two features are hardly worth the $400 jump for the next comparable option out there. Last but not least, Gulf Coast was a pleasure to buy from, and I would happily do it again! I placed the order over the weekend and had a tracking number before lunch on Monday. I received the headset that Thursday in Wichita, KS. The staff was very courteous on the phone and told me if I wasn’t happy, they’d take the headset back, no problem. Given the price of this item, someone had to sign for the package. I appreciate this considering all the porch pirates these days. I found Gulf Coast as the seller when I was searching this product on a much larger website and I’m very happy I bought direct from a small/locally owned business!
