Duckie and the Grackle?s Free Lens Cloths - A study in giving by a small art gallery & jewelry design studio on the Texas Coast Duckie and Grackle (Cherie and Glenn McBride) loved selling at their outdoor art festivals but Grackle was nearing 70 and the Gulf Coast weather was playing havoc on Duckie?s beautiful wild bird paintings. They had recently participated in a large festival in Rockport, Texas when a sudden squall from the Gulf of Mexico destroyed 33 neighboring tents, threatening life and limb. One summer day, 2010, Duckie popped in from painting a bird in her studio and asked, ?Hey Grackle, would you like to open a downtown art gallery?? The recent weather - heat, dust storms, tornados, Gulf squalls, thunder and rain - prompted Grackle, laying back in a recliner, to bolt forward and say ?Sure!? in a split second. Well, luckily Duckie had years of retailing experience in her family?s large ?Nowlin Jewelry? store. It closed in early 2007 because the family was tired and with the changing U.S. business climate, none of the children wanted to continue it. In fact, many U.S.A. independent jewelers were closing due to pressure from giant corporations with ties to overseas manufacturing. During the first two start-up years 2010 - 2012, the gallery struggled - as Duckie expected - and Grackle held onto his hat. Although it was a nice sidewalk shop with beautiful trees out front, it brought in very little sidewalk traffic. During that two years, the couple kept one eye on the front door and the other eye on the developing business climate and advice of Bernadette Jiwi and Seth Godin. It quickly unfolded right in front of them: ? The next person to come through the door would probably be a recent purchaser - back for something else. ? The next person responding to an ad would probably be a repeat customer - or their friend. ? The next large purchase would be made by someone who had already made a large purchase. ? The next new purchaser would have been recommended by another customer. And most importantly for the business ? ? Most of the purchasers would be recipients of some sort of ?giving? from the gallery - for example, an emailed ?Tiny Bird Songs? poem, story-telling, a birthday greeting, notecards, drinks and chatter in the gallery, an entertaining event in the gallery or even a lunch at the Grape Taste Restaurant next door. This kind of marketing proved magic ? and simple! They quit expensive advertising and began spending those funds on their Customers! Cards, letters, email and local newspaper ads were directed to the people they knew and loved - with no attempt to ?find new customers.? In 2012, the little business began pulling out of the ?Dip? and began searching for more ways to give to the customers. Finally, they tried lens cleaning cloths from custommousepad.com in Fairbanks, Alaska - with images of Duckie?s wild birds. Jackpot!! The gallery buzzed as sales doubled in 2013. But, in 2014, sales slacked a bit - rather than continuing to climb. They analyzed and analyzed. Events had gotten too exciting and they were losing their way. Then they found an artifact - an email written by Grackle to a friend in early 2013 that brought them back to reality: ?YESTERDAY, I GAVE A $5.00 GALLERY BOOK AND $4.50 WORTH OF LENS CLEANERS TO A MOTHER AND HER CHILD. THEY IMMEDIATELY PULLED OUT $100.00 IN BILLS AND BOUGHT A DOMINIQUE PAINTING. WE DO THIS MOST EVERY DAY IN THE NAME OF MARKETING. DON'T MIND SPENDING 10 PERCENT ON MARKETING IF THAT'S WHAT IT NEEDS ... ESPECIALLY IN JANUARY!!!? AND IT GOES WAY BEYOND THIS - WE LIKE TO GIVE. WHY ARE WE REALLY HERE?? - GRACKLE Finally, it was clear. They had quit giving lens cloths at the beginning of 2014. How silly!! Recently, they began giving the cloths again - with a stunning new wild bird scene by Duckie. Overnight, sales jumped through the roof. It?s going to be a record year folks! Purchased the fabric rubber backed #CMP SR1-1 with 3-color custom logo. We have ordered these three times (100 per). Although the rubber backing does not smell good when you first open the box, the smell dissipates quickly. They hold together very well in our rather dirty manufacturing shop where there are over 160 PC's. Have had visitors "borrow" them for souvenirs after visiting - which is both a positive and negative...
