Fast and easy deep dive into rust - despite the high value resources available online, I like to learn with a paper book and notes :) .

Rust books are hard to write because they have to strike the right balance for the audience they address: too hard and it alienates many, too easy and it is no more valuable than what is freely available online. I was a little disappointed in this book after reading the online Rust book and related content. I expected it to be more advanced and targeted towards practical problems. Instead a lot of the text felt like a classroom exercise. The author is exceptionally smart and experienced, I just expected something different out of this book’s contents. For a more practical introduction (after the official Rust book online), I recommend reading Luca Palmieri’s Zero to Production or Black Hat Rust by Sylvain Kerkour.

I have heard for the last few years that this is the best way to get up to speed with Rust. So far, it has not disappointed. The projects are fun and are aligned with the topic being taught. I had a little experience with Rust (some intro videos) before getting into this book and I’ve been able to keep pace quite well. I’m looking forward to finishing it.

It’s taking me time to get through it but I really enjoy the book so far. I deal mostly with SQL, C# and web programming so this book is helpful and introducing new ideas and techniques that I am not as experienced with as I would like to be.

"Rust in Action" appears to have missed both its final technical edit/restructuring, and also its final QA checking on the code samples provided (at least a dozen do not even compile; and more samples have other issues). If you are already familiar with Systems Programming from at least one other language, are already somewhat familar with Rust from somewhere else, and want to do Systems Programming in Rust, then this book is still worth considering. Especially if you can get it on sale/at a discount. Do be prepared to spend time fixing the examples, and piecing together the Rust explanations scattered throughout the book. (The GitHub repo has a bunch of PRs / issues with fixes for most of the flawed code samples; but the author has said the PRs will not be merged.)

International shipping seems particularly slow; the physical copy of the book apparently shipped 2 months ago, and has yet to arrive. (Fortunately the PDF arrived immediately, and you do get a PDF with the print book. In hindsight I would probably have only bought the PDF/eBook.)

It's a good book, that covers a lot of Rust. However, some sections are not that clear for programmers that don't come from languages that require explicit memory management or that are mostly used for the web (like JavaScript).

I enjoy the pragmatic approach in this book. I also like the way new ideas are introduced based on fundamental concepts. I do not rate it with 5 stars because there are several typos in the book that require a bit more of editorial work...
